I love 3 paycheck months!

Not only did some overtime hit my bank account this morning... but also an entire paycheck of beauty! I love the fact that i'm paid bi-weekly because twice a year an extra paycheck rolls into town and i'm able to stick the whole thing in retirement and towards savings goals!

$1,000.00 will be heading straight to the ROTH IRA in the next few days... and a beautiful $345.61 is going to our vacation fund!

Since its the end of the month and i had some over time from my last paycheck still floating around... and SCB and I have been very good with not spending money this month and doing really cheap date nights (Thank you chipotle BOGO coupons), we were able to squeeze $154.38 out of this months budget to add to our vacation fund so we have all the money we need to go on our trip (We estimate our trip should cost us $500 on the high end).

We even have $84.09 left in the budget after all of that and since my car needs to hit an auto place for a check up, we can use that money to go towards getting my car looked at if we don't spending it on gas or food before then. (It will technically go into the "car fund" and then be taken out to cover the maintenance costs if not spent... or we will just pull a few dollars out of the car fund to have mine looked at since that's what that little fund is for.)

No more Unemployment

Well, its official. We got a letter in the mail saying SCB was no longer eligible for unemployment extensions because the income he could use to qualify was not significant enough to garner an extension in one of the federal programs.

Amazingly, it actually took us 26 weeks to clear out the funds we were awarded in the Unemployment bank because there were 2 weeks (the weeks we did the farmer's market) where we didn't get our weekly check because we made more money then was brought in with the unemployment... that and our last check paid out to us was $1.00

All in all we received $1,905.00 in Unemployment... and i'm glad we took it. It allowed us to get our emergency fund finished and in place and it gave us some start up funds for SCB's pen turning business. It also gave us some good time to readjust our budget and spending to where we are now.

If we had applied for benefits in November when they had laid him off, we would still be getting unemployment payments because there's some rule about getting to use an unfinished claim when a newer one runs out or something like that... So my advice to anyone else out there--- apply the nano second you get laid off... no matter how temporary the situation may be.

But, its water under the bridge and hindsight is 20-20 and i'm not going to fester over something that just isn't worth my time.

Weekly Updates (Spending & Money Goals)

Another week has rolled by and its time to check in. SCB started going to Labor Ready again and signing in for work at the most gross hour of 4am. While we haven't received any jobs or temporary gigs from it yet, its only been a week and he's been getting there early enough to be the second or third person on the list.

It's really hard for him to get up that early (3:30am) but I'm proud of him for going and trying to do the best he can. After he checks in there he comes home and waits. It still gives him the opportunity to wood turn and make pens and also help around the house with things.

But in more exciting news, SCB did get 2 paid working gigs this past week through Apple One!

If you don't remember, I mentioned a few months back that a gal on my Relay For Life planning committee worked for Apple One (a temp placing agency) and she invited SCB into the program when she heard about our situation and how he had job offers rescinded because of his record. Until now, nothing has come across her desk that didn't need a background check of some kind, so we hadn't heard from her except on a few occasions when she called and said she "might" have something for us that didn't turn out.

Well it turns out a local business guy needed someone to help assembling some shelves in his warehouse and so our friend called us up and a half hour later he was driving to work. He got 4 hours on Thursday and another 4 or so on Friday finishing up the job and we should receive a paycheck from them next week some time.

I also got a check from my work, reimbursing me for driving my car around on city business, so we get to add another $24.69 into our budget for the month. This should help us out because I need to start calling around for prices to have my car checked up on. The warranty is finally expired so there's no point taking it to the dealership for its 5k mile visitation... but in less than 300 miles my car will tip over onto 70,000 miles. So best to shop around and figure out where the best place to take it is.

I also called our old dentist up to look into finishing SCB's dental work... and even though i got a live person on the phone, the office was "closed" and someone would "call us back the next day" with the information I requested....  a week later, and no one has phoned me back. We really want to get an idea as to how much the work will cost us so we make sure we have the money together when we go somewhere else to get it done.

We cashed in our rewards points at Fresh & Easy because we really wanted ice cream and supplies to make smoothies with and they weren't on sale... So we ended up not only using a $5 off $25 coupon... but also getting $18 off in  rewards points!!! I love their rewards system. We also made a trip down to Walmart to pick up some house items, crochet supplies (so I can use up the yarn I have at home), and a cooler with some of the overtime I had from my last paycheck...

Why a Cooler? Well, as a nice surprise update to this post, it looks like i'll be taking a week off of work and going on vacation to The Great Basin National Park..... and SCB's mom and dad and his brother and his family will be meeting us down there!!!! I'll go into more details on what the trip entails and how we are paying for it in another post later down the line :) But on to our Weekly report!

Weekly Spending:
June 16th:

  • $13.99 Fresh & Easy (Groceries)
  • $5.99 Sprouts

  • $51.26 Walmart (Cooler for our trip, Crochet Supplies, house/other stuff)

June 21st:
June 22nd:

Money Goals:

  1. Vacation Fund: $0.00/ $500.00 (0.00%)
  2. 2012 Roth IRA SCG:  $1,387.63 / $5,000.00 (27.75%)
  3. $1,000.00 Car Fund: $269.58 / $1,000.00  (26.96%)
  4. Paying Extra on the House:  $45.77 / $1,301.28 (2 additional mortgage payments) (3.51%).
  5. 2nd Roth IRA: $0 / ? We're just aiming to put 15% of what SCB earns in this account. Unemployment doesn't count as income... so at the end of the year, we will just take 15% of what he earns and open a new Roth IRA for Him if we have enough money to at Vanguard... If not, then we will open one up for him at ING (since there is no minimum amount needed) and park the money over there until we have enough funds to transfer it over to Vanguard.

Farmer's Market Run Down

Last Friday SCB did his second run at the local farmer's market and we are proud to say he did better than last month.... but boy were we worried.

The weather wouldn't cooperate and stayed grey and uninviting so business was really slow in the beginning. It took 30 minuets into the market for him to sell a single item... one bottle opener (which went for $15 since we knocked the price down $5 since none sold last month).

Then it took almost 2 and a half hours down the line for more action to start happening. This worried us because last month all the action happened the first few hours and he didn't sell anything after 11:45am... but thankfully this was just the opposite! In the last hour and 15 minutes he sold:

4 pens to one lady...

Then 2 bottle stopper corkscrew sets....

then another pen....

and another...

then 3 more pens before closing up shop

None of the matching letter opener/pen sets sold, despite dropping the price down $5 to $30 for the set... and our $5 "support the artist" key chains didn't move either, but those don't cost us much since we use the blanks from broken pens so it only costs us the small kit.

But i'm very grateful that he ended up selling 10 pens, one bottle opener, and 2 of the corkscrew bottle stoppers for a total of $195.00 before any fees.

Most people paid in cash this time too which was very different from the first market with only one person paying cash.

After the $20 stall fee and the $2.66 in credit card fees, we walked away with $172.34 for the day (not including the $14.63 we collected in sales tax that i'll remit to the state at the end of the month).

Unfortunately not all the money we earned will be able to be re-invested in SCB's business. We noticed the day before that our petty cash box didn't have the correct amount of money in it to start the sales day. It took a few minutes for us to figure out what happened to it, but we had taken some money out of it after the market last month to get change and forgot to put it back in there.... so it just stayed in SCB's wallet and we just assumed it was pocket money and whittled it away here and there over the course of last month/this month.... so we used some of the profits to "fix the till" after our showing.

But just like with last time, we will be re-investing the money on more inventory... and we are sticking just to pens since they sell more then anything else and are the least costly item to make. It's our hope that we might be able to get a spot in the holiday boutique around Christmas time and really do some great selling because they get a few 1,000 people to come out to it every year... only problem is that the stalls are $90 a pop and we would need a few hundred pens because you need to have inventory to cover both days.... which would mean some serious investing in the company... like dropping a grand on supplies. It's not out of the question, but we are taking it slow and using the farmer's market as a test site for what sells and doesn't sell.

Also, since we are hands down their easiest drama free vendor, the gal who runs the market said she would try and squeeze us in next month is someone cancels last minute or if they re-configure the set up so they can fit more vendors... So who knows, we might be back in a month to sell again! :)

So, since we sold 10 pens, we ordered enough supplies to make 20 more pens from our two main suppliers and SCB will get to work for our August showing if not one for July.

I'm hoping by the end of the year that we will be able to break even on the business and possibly start pulling money out once we have a sizable inventory all geared up and ready to go.

Weekly Updates

We had a fairly busy week this week. I worked 7 days straight, teaching two lifeguard in-service/training days for our staff before the summer season hits just next week... and we wrapped up our farmer's market visit. I'll write a whole post for that topic in the coming days, but i'm happy to say we did better then last time :).

We got a slew of BOGO coupons for Chipotle, and since its walking distance from our place, we used one this week for a cheap date night... and I really proud of our weekly spending this week. We didn't buy anything we didn't plan on getting! It was a week of just groceries, gas, and one date night! After our prior weeks and months of stress spending, i'm glad we are starting to get things under control again.

I got paid on Friday and got the holiday pay from working Memorial Day weekend on my check. We will keep this money in the budget for 2 weeks and if we don't dip into it, we will transfer it to savings when my next paycheck drops in at the end of the month (since its a 3 paycheck month!!!).

We were able to transfer SCB's extra $100 from his vacation pay out to savings, so our car fund sits now needed $730.42 to hit $1,000.00. Sadly, this little account will take a hit next month most likely since my car will be hitting 70k miles on it and i'll need to take it in to be serviced.

And gas.... Under $4 a gallon!!!!!!

Weekly Spending

9-Jun $12.52 Gas
$15.16 Costco (Sliced Cheese, buns, Roast Chicken)
$30.83 Fresh & Easy (Groceries)
10-Jun
11-Jun
12-Jun
13-Jun $7.22 Chipotle (Date Night) Woot for BOGO Coupon
14-Jun $3.92 CVS (Posterboard for farmers market)
15-Jun

Money Goals

  1. 2012 Roth IRA SCG:  $1,387.63 / $5,000.00 (27.75%)
  2. Paying Extra on the House:  $45.77 / $1,301.28 (2 additional mortgage payments) (3.51%).
  3. $1,000.00 Car Fund: $269.58 / $1,000.00  (26.96%)
  4. 2nd Roth IRA: $0 / ? We're just aiming to put 15% of what SCB earns in this account. Unemployment doesn't count as income... so I think we have to wait until his business turns a profit.

Official Layoff Notice

So SCB went and got the mail and found an official layoff notice from his old employer. It's been 6 months to the date from when he got the "ax" and I'm still bummed out about it.

It's a bit of a salt in the wound situation since they never returned his calls about working or coming back in any aspect... But I guess that's what happens in this type of economy.

but, there is a bit of silver lining.

Apparently the hubby had been there long enough to earn a bit of vacation so they paid it out to him.

13.54 hours @ $10 an hour.

After they took taxes and everything out of it we get $111.40.

Not bad for something we didn't know was even coming in and our way... but it does remove any and all hope that they will call him and try and give him some work.

Vacation Galore... and no time to take it...

Now that "Relay" no longer takes all of time and then some, I finally sat down to look at my pay stubs and see how much extra vacation I have from all those hours I put in... and its staggering for 3 reasons...

One, I never used any of my regular vacation hours because I would simply adjust my hours when I could so that pile grew grew grew because I pulled from my converted vacation bank instead...

and second, I seldom could adjust my hours at work because a co-worker quit recently (which i'm not complaining about) and schedules have been really tight so its been more trouble getting me a day off then its worth...

and third, I hit the 7 year marker in terms of calculating my vacation with my company.

Yup, that last one means I get 8.3 hours of vacation a check right now.... That's a day off every check! I guess there is something to working with the same company for so long!

So come Friday when the paycheck graces my checking account I will have 232.11 hours of regular vacation... and 72.14 hours of converted work time to vacation...

For you math geeks out there that's a whopping 304.25 vacation hours. 7.6 weeks of pure vacation...

Too bad we don't really have the money for a trip right now, But I think the best thing I can do is just try and take a day off every two weeks or so until work slows down and I can get a few more days off consecutively. Our one year anniversary is coming up around the corner, and there are a few DIY projects I'd love to get my hands on around the house...

Like finishing my kitchen door!

Weekly Updates (Spending & Money Goals)

I married a bro-ny... and i'm okay
with it.
A bit of normalcy has entered my life since the end of Relay (although there are still things to work on and do!). I feel more confident going into our next year already having gone through and done it once! Our city raised over $105,000.00 for the American Cancer Society and we still have donations coming in! My crochet flowers were a hit and all 60 sold out at $2 a piece and my little critters/animals I made flew off the table so those will return for next year!

But it has been wonderful to embrace normalcy again. I got to start my Saturday morning walks back with my friend this week, it seems the hubby and I have been able to real in our spending since our life has calmed down, and we have been preparing for our next showing at the farmer's market on Friday (2 days before father's day).

We already have doubled the inventory since last month & we have been promised a better location this go around too since I pitched how great the pens would sell for father's day. The gal who coordinates the craft vendors is rooting for us!

On the spiritual end of things, I've finally finished the Book of Mormon, and while i'm not at the point of joining the church or anything, I was glad to see myself pleasantly surprised that it didn't have a lot of the more "interesting" philosophy I believed it would. Were still hanging out with missionaries once a week, but now were  going to start talking about the church itself and how it got to be what it is today, which as a history nut is so up my ally.

Yup... Camo Duct Tape tie...
Despite finally getting my first paycheck of the year without any overtime on it, I was still already able to bring in a little extra green. A woman asked if I wouldn't mind doing a quick design for her on Vista Print to match her business cards. I was planning it a favor, told her so twice, and for around 15-20 minutes of my time I got a check for $70! I even tried to give it back to her but she insisted I take it.

We also emptied the last of SCB's unemployment off his EDD Card. Apparently that letter he got in the mail was because he checked the wrong box on his form... but we haven't received any more correspondence from them and all the money he was awarded has run out. Anyone know where to go from here? They didn't mail us anything about extended our benefits or reapplying.... Which is part of the reason that SCB has been slaving away pen turning like crazy the past few days. We are determined to make every last piece of inventory before Friday so we can give it our best shot and earn as much as possible since the market vendors are supposed to rotate so we don't see a July opportunity since they made an exception for us to come back since it was so close to father's day. I called about the annual 4th of July street fair, but for sellers, its a $90 stall fee and we haven't been able to clear much profit to afford to do that since we re-invested the profits from last time on more inventory and I have to work that day already and for a fair that large, SCB would want me there. But I tried emailing the Farmer's market in Irvine to see about vendor fees but no one responded back yet... I'll have to try the number since email is apparently a no go for them.

SCB is frozen at Relay after letting
one of my friends sleep in the
tent so she wouldn't freeze...
(luv him)
With our new budget this month including giving, we generally come up a bit short in a few areas, as I mentioned in our budget post:
  • Roth is short $106.82 a month from maxing it out
  • Birthday fund was eliminated ($50 a month)
But with the $70 check I got and the last of SCB's unemployment, we were able to catch these two items up for the month so now any monthly extras will go towards our car fund, which is currently only $830.82 away from our goal. Once it hits $1,000.00 we will be able to consider getting rid of SCB's 21 year old car and turning his old car into the state for $1,000.00 and buying my mom's more reliable 2001 single cab truck for $2k (It has only 60,000 miles on it!). The old escort has been making not the best sounds lately... I guess you could say we are at the point where we are considering the whole, do we go and be a once car family--- or do we purchase my mom's truck at a STEAL of a price just to be on the safer side in case we need a second car... The truck won't be around forever... a few of my sisters friends have mentioned wanting it and my mom will give it to us first over them... but its just a matter of time. She's willing to go till the end of the year/Jan for us to make a decision (when the escort comes up for SMOG renewal at CA standards for the first time).

Wow, a whole lot of updates for just a week so I better get on to our weekly spending!

Weekly Spending:

June 1:

June 3:
June 4:
  • $17.29 Gas (top off my mom's truck we borrowed for Relay)

  • $809.40 Mortgage

  • $9.18 Costco (Groceries- Milk & Block Cheese)
June 6:
  • $15.15 Fuddruckers (Eating out/Date Night)
June 7:
June 8:

Money Goals:
  1. 2012 Roth IRA SCG:  $1,225.73 / $5,000.00 (24.51%)
  2. Emergency Fund: $12,500.00 / $12,500.00 (100%)  Done

  5. 2nd Roth IRA: $0 / ? We're just aiming to put 15% of what SCB earns in this account. Unemployment doesn't count as income... so I think we have to wait until his business turns a profit.

More money saving moves

I'm celebrating small victories right now :)

When I was working on my last post, I noticed that we received two credits to our escrow account from the county from the last time I had my mortgage property taxes fixed.

We had two payments of $28.99 added to our escrow account. So after calling BOFA and explaining myself correctly twice, we will be getting a check in the mail for $62.91 (two 28.99 payments and an additional 4.93 we have overpaid into our account.)

So next month we will get to apply that towards our principle payment, and our mortgage has officially dropped to 802.86 a month now.

All because I watch my statements and I double check other people's math!

Mortgage Update (June 2012)

Mortgage Update:
Principle paid down: $161.64
Interest: $489.00
Additional Principle: $4.13

New Balance: $111,611.04

The pay off date is still January 2039 which is 8 months ahead of schedule. If I continue to pay the minimum on my loan, I will pay $111,855.89 in interest instead of the original $116,404.23. The extra $1,384.87 I've tossed at the mortgage to date has saved us $4,548.34 in interest over the life of the loan.

All in all, it took me $7,057.08 to get the keys to my condo... and another $17,672.29 to remodel and repair it...

In short, I was -$24,729.37 in the hole on day one...

But thankfully the hole is getting filled in a little bit each and every year.
  • In 2009 I got the First Time Home buyer's Credit giving us $8,000.00. I also got to write off some of the property tax I paid in addition to taking the standard deduction. This gave us an extra $90.10... but then I had to pay an Electrician $95.00 to fix an outlet... We ended 2009 with a refund from my botched tile job that gave us  another $1,265.00.
  • In 2010 I saved $1,087.00 on my federal taxes and $461.00 on my State taxes from itemizing my homeowners expenses. (This is what I received ABOVE what I would have with just the standard deduction).
  • In 2011 I spent $12.97 at home depot, and $72.29 on a kitchen door, but I received a small $70 refund check from over paid closing costs. We also saved $494.04 by living in our condo instead of renting (See Mortgage Update + Condo Costs December '11 for that break down.) Since we tied the knot in 2011 we won't be able to itemize our housing costs so there's no savings there for us.
so this leaves us $13,442.49 in the hole...
  • If we assume our home is worth at least what we paid for it, then we have $8,388.96 in equity...
Leaving us about $5,053.53 in the hole after 2.75 years.

We also assume our monthly mortgage payments are a wash since its cheaper to OWN our home then to RENT an apartment. Check out Housing Comps 2012 for how we figured that one out.

Thus far for 2012 we have spent $6,457.80 to live in our condo (Instead of $8,363.10 for the apartment).
  • All Mortgage Payments (including principle, interest, property taxes, MIP, and additional principle:) $4,849.98
  • HOA: $1,575.00 ($262.50 a month)
  • Home Repairs/Improvements: $0
  • Earthquake Insurance: $0
  • Homeowners Insurance: $0

Saving us $1,905.30 so far this year over renting.

If I sold the condo tomorrow, I'd have to sell the property for $132,621.96 to break even.
  • This assumes a 6% total commission ($7,957.321)
  • Enough money to refund the amount i'm in the hole for ($5,053.53)
  • and enough money to cover the first time homeowners tax credit i'd have to repay for not living in the property for 3 years. ($8,000.00)
But if I wait out the credit, in November of this year I'd be able to sell for $122,369.62
  • This assumes a 6% total commission ($7,342.18)
  • and enough money to refund the amount I would be in the hole for 5 months down the line assuming I make just the minimum payments till then ($4,234.71)

Car insurance update!

Over the course of this past year, we have been making an effort to eliminate and get rid of some of our annual bills since SCB does not have a regular job anymore. (See Here  & Here for some cuts we already made)

After receiving our 6 month car insurance premium bills an idea came to mind. I called and asked if we could get a discount on SCB's insurance since he was no longer driving to work and maybe only filled up his car once a month.

Turns out, we could!

I just received a refund check for $42.92!

So, his 6 month car insurance bill is now only $155.67! Mine is $362.51 still since I still drive my car to work and my car is newer and i had that one stop light issue that hasn't gone away yet.

Since these bills are paid every 6 months we take the amount we pay and multiply it by 2, then add our earthquake annual premium ($322) and our homeowners annual premium (261) and then divide by 12 figure out how much we need to set aside monthly to cover all our insurance bills.

Looks like we only need to set aside $135.00 a month to cover our annual insurance bills instead of $143.00.

June Budget

Looks like a few new changes for us this month. We have decided that since i'm regularly attending SCB's church that we will resume trying to give despite his lack of job at the moment and our unsure basis with unemployment. It just feels like we have been missing something not doing it the past few months so while it means our budget is going to get tighter, its something we feel like we need to do at this point in time...

I'm proud that we were able to rein in some of our spending last month to help prepare us for the changes happening this month. We spent 66% less on eating out this month then we did last!

As for ongoing items, We still need to get SCB to the dentist and therefore have not touched our $2600 slush fund. We are hoping that this month we will finally be able to get it taken care of!

After the dental is done, we'd like to replace the fan/vent in the bathroom, finish the trim and paint on the laundry room door we installed 6 months ago, get that car fund to $1,000.00, set aside gas money to go out to Utah over the holidays ($300), and toss a few extra bucks at the mortgage if we are able.... Mind you that all comes only after we max out my Roth IRA.

We have amphibious goals... and to be honest, they are a bit daunting at the moment.

Here's our June Budget:

Paycheck #1:
  • Mortgage (P&I, Property taxes, MIP): $808.18
  • Giving $120.00
  • Groceries & Food: $250.00
  • Prescriptions/doctors appointments: $21.22
Paycheck #2:
  • Giving: $120.00
  • HOA: $262.50
  • Insurance (2 Autos, earthquake, homeowners) $143.00
  • Utility Bills (2 Cell Phones, Electricity, Internet): $230.00
  • Prescriptions/doctors appointments: $10.00
  • Gasoline/Auto: $150.00
  • Christmas: $50.00
  • Date Nights/ Spending Money $80.00
  • Roth IRA $153.90
So if you can do the math, our Roth IRA is going to come up short by 114.82 a month (assuming we dump $1,000 of each "extra check" I get into the Roth this year).

We also lost our birthday savings fund ($50 a month) and we really reduced our gasoline/auto monthly allotment.

So any overtime and extra windfalls will first go to the Roth IRA to catch it up before its applied anywhere else. We will see how it works next month. I know I will have holiday pay and overtime on a paycheck or two in June so that will help if we run a bit off with the new budget.

I'm also getting three paychecks next month so the Roth IRA is going to get some serious MONEY!!!
