4 Month Spending Re-cap

Its been a while since I updated our spending on the blog... but I have been keeping track! Since we are really hoping that October will be the month we get back on track, I thought it would be good to take the time to finally categorize all the spending we have done since MAY!

Its not perfect and we have a lot of "other" because I didn't save receipts for that long to really itemize out what all of it was, but hopefully i'll get back into the swing of things with October. I may have forgotten something, but its a pretty good snap shot... and its a little scary. Since we found out about the little goober, things we have been putting off got escalated as we'd rather make the purchases now as a DINK family (Dual Income No Kids), than when things get tighter as we search for daycare options down the line.

My Friend's Wedding :)
South County Boy and I did come to a decision that we won't be funding our Roth IRA's for 2014. We would rather take a the rest of this year to do the improvement projects we need to before the baby comes and pay cash for them and build up reserves and make it so we can stay in the condo as long as possible this year, then fund the retirement accounts. I still have my pension contributions going, and he still has his 401k withdraws, but we probably won't be doing a Roth this year for either of us... and i'm okay with that.

So lets get down to the nitty gritty, shall we?

What we spent in May

We had hoped May was going to be a cut and dry month for us... but boy were we wrong! We spent money like no other and if it weren't for the fact that it was a 3 paycheck month for us, we would have gone into the red. With that being said, June for sure is going to be a savings month because it has to-- My Roth IRA got shorted $1200 since we had to spend that check instead of save it...

Our eating out was triple what it normally was because my work house got all junked up and we were too exhausted to cook or just didn't have the time to prep the healthy foods we purchased...

failed in the final stretch

We didn't make it through our no spend month. We still added to our savings which was good, and I think it helped us start to get back on point a bit more, but we didn't make it, and there's no way to sugar coat that.

You see the flu hit SCB towards the end of the month... and a few days before that he forgot to take his antidepressants so we had a bit of a melt down week... and i called it off for his sanity.

But we have officially decided to just live off my income and try and save his.

For October, our budget will be a little all over the place because SCB will be changing health insurance plans. He's now eligible for his work benefits and the plan they offer is much better than his independent plan with Kaiser, but we will have to pay 2 premiums this month because his new insurance requires him to pay a month in advance of coverage.

But our emergency fund is growing and we finally have the sticker we need to register our car in California, so hopefully we can do that next week.

August '13 Spending

I guess I'll start with saying
we spent money...
and were going to spend more

First off, SCB and I got to get sealed in the Newport Beach Temple this month as you all saw in the photos we posted on Monday...

And because we had such a big day and event planned for us, we had lots of family come in to town to visit... and so we spent a good amount of money this month.

Family/Sealing
Since we weren't at home much while they were there, we ate out more frequently... including treating the whole family to a nice dinner at Stone Fire Grill to thank them for traveling out to California to see us all (we included this amount in our over all eating out number below)...
La Brea Tar Pit :)
We visited the La Brea Tar Pits ($31.59)
Paid a photographer $200 to capture a wonderful day

Paid some baby sitters $30 to occupy the little ones for our sealing.
Paid $58 in alterations to my white dress because it was too big in the top and too small in the sleeves.... That also included getting my temple dress hemmed because it was too long.

I bought some make up ($43.72) and did my own hair/make up for the sealing instead of paying for someone to do it since it was much cheaper... so I spent $45 instead of like $200 at a salon, so I call that a win.
SCB dancing with our Dog...
Other Expenses
Then there was the stuff that came up
  • We bought a tablet from one of SCB brother's for $175 so we can finally get rid of the 2 semi working laptops that we no longer want to use... (this was want... and after a year and a half of unemployment we were happy to get such a good deal!)
  • We purchased some camping "72 hour" meals from WOOT.com for $146.95 (This was so last minute that had we known about the offer sooner, we would have probably bought more stuff that was already sold out--- but this falls in line with our church prepardness project we are working on)
  • Then there was the stuff off Amazon: $59.69 (really $19.69 after my CC Rewards)
  • We paid our Costco Renewal: $55
  • and then we bought a second Fan for $28.00 after we saw what our whopper $100+ Electricity Bill looked like for using our wall ac unit...
  • The couch $667.52 we replaced at the beginning of the month
  • and a lot of little things that added up to $116.03.... including the BEST $10 I have spent in a long while:
We bought some magnets for our fridge that had these cute little hooks on them which freed up so much space in our drawer and makes it so I can actually reach the pot holders now (SCB liked to put them on top of the fridge)... and we bought hooks.

I know so simple right? But I love being able to have a place for Roxy's park bag and my purse, and any bags I have that I use to ferry things to and from work. I hate clutter and things on the floor... Seriously the best $10 I have spent in a while!

Then there was the Car Problem... and Solution
Date Night at CA Fish Gril
We know that in the next year or so we will have to take "Wanda," SCB's '91 Ford Escort, in for another smog check... and she will most likely fail because they have recently changed the emission standards in California.

Now, originally Wanda was given to SCB for free from a family member (I think his grandpa)... and we have been letting it be known that when we can't keep her,  we would be willing to "give" her away. An idea was forming that Wanda would go to Oregon (where there are no emission standards) since SCB has a nephew up there that will be turning 16 in a year or so. Well, I got a phone call this week informing me that one of SCB's older brothers actually needs a car and the family that was planning on receiving Wanda wanted us to contact him first and offer her to him when we get rid of her.

The goal has always been for us to keep Wanda as long as we legally could... and we would test her at renewal in hopes that she would pass before relinquishing her to someone else.

The brother who currently needs a car is working for peanuts while he finished his PHD... and doesn't really have the money to purchase a car... But his need for one has increased so much that he has apparently been trying to find a way to afford another family members car that is now "up for sale."

"Sally" the car that is up for sale, is a '03 Ford Escort with around 60,000 miles... Since this is a transaction between family members, Sally has been offered to be sold for only $2k. The amount is much lower then they paid for her (especially considering all the repairs that went into her) because A) their brother really needs a car... and B) the brother who currently owns Sally will be able to use their parents spare car and home for free while their parents are on an 18 month mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. (For insurance issues/purposes, the grad student would not be able to just use their parents car when they leave)...

When we initialy heard about Sally, we asked the grad student brother if he would be interested in having Wanda for free instead. Without hesitation he told us that a free car would be a blessed relief over paying for one... but that the problem was time. He couldn't wait a year for her to probably fail Smog... and miss out on the $2k car that needed to be sold relatively soon.

After some talking, I tossed out the idea to SCB of purchasing Sally for $2k so we could give Wanda to his brother. We essentially would be getting a great deal on a car identical to the model we have now... but with 80,000 LESS miles, a good paint job and better interior, and would most likely have fewer emissions issues down the road... The only downside we found out is that she, like Wanda, has a broken AC unit.

After some thought and conversation, we decided we would drive Wanda out to Utah over the Labor Day weekend and purchase Sally for $2,000... (Since SCB doesn't have any vacation time and we both magically have Labor Day off, this is the only weekend we could make it happen). We have also negotiated for someone to front the cost of fixing the AC, ($600) so we don't die driving home from Vegas in the current heat wave sitting in holiday traffic on Monday. So in total, we are purchasing a 2003 Ford Escort with 60,000 miles, a working AC unit, a better paint job and interrior, with a chance of passing emission standards for many more years down the line for $2,600.00

In preparation for the trip to Utah, we took Wanda in for an oil change and check up... and discovered both her front and back breaks needed to be replaced... her radiator had cracked, and the thermostat needed to be repaired.

All in all it would cost us $1,045.47 to get her out to Utah...

When we told SCB's parents and brothers about the repairs (we didn't feel in good concious that we could give his brother a car with those issues, nor did we think we could safely drive it to Utah without fixing them now), they offered to pay the $1,000 to fix Wanda up since we are giving her away...

We originally thought the AC repair on Sally would be $1,000 so they may just pay the AC repair bill instead for us... but were just going to figure out who is paying for what when we get there.

So for now, we'll add $1045.47 in car repairs to August's spending.

June Spending

Holy Batman folks! Money has been really crazy in the South County household the past 2 months with the refinance and SCB's full time job. Having money is a really weird concept after being on a tighter budget for so long. We definitely let out the reins and enjoyed the fruits of our now joint labor.

Despite eating out too much (like 4 times what we normally do) and just picking up things we have wanted for a while but have had to say no to because they didn't fit in the budget (clothes, dog, kitchen stuff)... we did end the month with a surplus of $600.00 AFTER putting away the rest of the money for our Summer family Stay-cation and then another $300 for our winter Utah Trip.

So just keep in mind that we didn't just spend every dime that came in... but for what we normally spend, we spent a lot.

Now that we've had a month to "cool" our tightwad jets and get a bunch of "wants" out of the way. (You have no idea how fun it is to tell my husband "sure" "yes" and "ok" and watch his face light up instead of  always saying "no" for a change).

Here's the damage:
What we have spent this month
Groceries:  $318.27
Gasoline: $228.76
Health Insurance: $178.00
Prescriptions: $60
Eating Out: $190.98 <--- insane="" p="">
Housing: $1,065.48 (may's payment)
Giving: $565
Anniversary: $52.49 (its next month)
Gifts: $16.02
Electricity: $51.35
Cell Phones: $137.91
Internet: $28.99
Pocket Money: $45.00
Clothes: SCG- $23.72
Clothes: SCB- $177.01 (had to replace all my bras!)
Our Doggy: $520.78
Other: $341.73

Groceries were higher because we filled up a propane tank and I did another grocery run at the tail end of this month instead of waiting for next month. I totally gave in and let my husband go crazy with the eating out. It's his favorite thing to do and with us still balancing his working with mine, we ate out A LOT. While we don't go really expensive places-- we almost blew $200 on eating out. We hit a "treat out" 12 times in June. Sure, some were only $5 here, BUT MAN! That category is going DOWN next month for sure.

I also dropped almost $200 this month at Victoria Secret. I had to literally replace all my bras because after loosing 15 lbs and keeping it off, none of my bras fit anymore and I could no longer get away with trying to wear sport bras under everything. With his new job and their semi annual sale lining up together like magic, there were no regrets there... especially since those bras hold up forever!

After we got through the month and started to see the damage as I was adding things in, we realized that we needed to institute the pocket money idea again. Having mad money we can spend without telling one another is amazing. It means my husband can curb his "treats" on a lunch break and my plans to cook a great meal don't get tossed down the drain.

The $300 of other expenses includes:
 $15.00 Relay for Life
$76.78 Amazon -2 trac phones, TV Wall mount, craft supplies
 $0.99 application
$52.05 produce slicer and lint roller
 $27.00 Super Cuts
 $39.70 Tupperware and Kitchen stuff
$47.95 Our first 2 prepaid Cell Phone Cards and candy
$49.26 water hose, spare keys from Home depot
$33.00   Notary and application fee for my dad's birth certificate.

Basically stuff we have been wanting and haven't been able to get. Our kitchen Tupperware needed some replacing and while we were looking around, we found a better deal for a produce slicer so we will be returning the one we bought.

A short Money Update....

So after my long winded budget post the other day, I have some updates for you now that the extra check of all happy has hit my account...

The overtime I indicated that i would be expecting, was that 3 day lifeguard class I taught last month... which meant some big buck-er-oos...

After we tithe, it is enough money to send our first $1,100 lump sum to the Roth IRA like we planed... it also gives us $208.24 to send up to the Roth to make up for last month when we didn't drop the full amount in because we cash flowed the home appraisal... It also gives us the $97.36 we may or may not be in the hole, so now regardless we aren't in the hole for may because we end up with a positive $4.86 to our name... and we still have the May mortgage payment in its fullness if we need to send it in this week if we aren't signing our loan documents.

I already feel so much better... Our outline for June is so much simplier:
  • Pay back May overage if there is one... (DONE)
  • Pay any out of pocket mortgage refinance costs without dipping into the Emergency Fund...
  • Get Roth IRA Balance to $2,500.00 since we are 6 months into the year... Currently Need: $1,534.85  (DONE)
All we have to do is just cash flow the mortgage refinance! So if we don't pay our May mortgage we are all set with the money we need... if we do need to pay it, we will have SCB's paychecks, and I should have some overtime coming in from the holiday to help... and since we need around $400, we should be all set! and we'll eventually get that money back when they cash out our escrow account from the first mortgage.

Its nice with us each having a job! I could get used to having to worry less about money.... :)

Money is crazy... May spending

I'm was going to hold out and wait on our full monthly update because our money is a mess right now... but if I can't be transparent and admit that somehow we have either a $97.36 short fall... or a $705.62 windfall.... I really have no excuse for blogging... especially because I can explain it...

First, there is the Mortgage/Refi Business
We haven't paid our mortgage for May yet... but I still have the money set aside for it... It's technically due June 1st and late by June 15th... but the bank said that they are planning to close our new loan on June 3rd, the loan will most likely fund on Friday June 7th... so I should be able to see the new loan online by Wed the 12th at the latest... and if that's the case it looks like we may not have to cut them a check for May... or even June for that matter because our first mortgage would be due August 1st so we would pay for that in July. Which means technically I have $802.98... so we technically have a surplus of $705.62 after I take off our overage... which is also enough money to happily re-fill last months Roth IRA shortfall and cover the money we want to set aside for our next annual goal... but...

I'm worried that I may need to pay the mortgage after all... our loan may not close on time... and if we don't sign the papers on Monday, I'm paying the mortgage to be on the safe side. But here's where things get tricky. If I end up paying the mortgage, there's a chance we won't have to cut a $400 check for our escrow account for property taxes, because the amount we are short could then be rolled into the loan... possibly--- But on the other side, even if we don't pay the loan for May, we will need approximately $400 to fund the property tax escrow account (or $400 on top of the May mortgage payment).... but, 2 weeks after the loan closes, they will refund the money that's currently in my escrow account right now... Which kind of makes the $400 a wash in the end...

Second, its a three paycheck month
YUP folks, its a 3 paycheck month and that check comes with OVERTIME TOO. The check comes in today so it may in fact have enough money in overtime to cover the current months shortfall and bring us to even (minus the Roth shortfall from last month)... but I don't know because i'm writing this before it hits my account.

Normally I take $1,100 from the extra check i get 2 times a year and dump it into the roth ira... but with all the uncertainty with the mortgage, we are going to keep the money in our checking account in case we need it... and then try and refund the Roth after the refi...  which could make our windfall even larger... like $1,800.00

Third, we broke down and did some shopping...

We kept track of everything and all the receipts, but we did some shopping and strayed from the budget this month. I had overtime and we spent it... We puppy sat over the weekend and spent it... and i'm not mad about it at all.

SCB lost some weight and needed to replace all of his shorts from last summer... and with his new job now, we may need to get him a few more new things... and while it doesn't show up in the budget since I got cash for my birthday from my mom and my aunt, I myself have been doing some serious wardrobe updates since i've lost that 15-20 lbs. Add in last minute grocery runs for SCB so he can pack a lunch for work and trying to fit into our new routine, its not surprising that we exceeded our eating out budget... and I let SCB order us 2 awesome backpacking packs so we can finally use to update our emergency kits.

Fourth, my birthday
Then there was some of the special carryover birthday spending that happened. SCB didn't realize he needed to do something special for my birthday on my birthday because we celebrated earlier in the week with my family... so the "i'm sorry" birthday tokens appeared... including wonderful cupcakes for the office from nothing bunt cakes....  Then later that week we went to disneyland and just hit the atm for $100 so we would have spending money.... and while we didn't spend all of it at disneyland, we spent some of it on Relay and odds and ends... which brings me to....

The HUGE project I've been working on... the Relay For Life fundraiser that I'm in charge of... that's already raised $97,000 for the American Cancer Society--- that i'm sure we will be spending more money at between food and prizes, and games... so....

All in all, things just aren't so final this month... In fact, they feel more fluid than ever because there just doesn't seem to have a cut off point. But I technically did keep track of all our spending... so here it is... just way skewed...

June Budget...
This probably won't be accurate, but its a best guess... especially at this point...
  1. Pay back May overage if there is one...
  2. Pay any out of pocket mortgage refinance costs without dipping into the Emergency Fund...
  3. Get Roth IRA Balance to $2,500.00 since we are 6 months into the year... Currently Need: $1,534.85
How am I going to do all that? With SCB's paychecks, holiday overtime, and hopefully my 3 paycheck from May once the mortgage refinance goes through. Our goal for June is to NOT inflate our life style with SCB's additional income coming in. We will just Tithe and Save it until all the above mess is balanced.... which is going to be REALLY hard to do... especially for him. Right now it looks like SCB will be stationed at
a local site nearby my work so we aren't sure how big of a gasoline budget we will have to expand our current budget by, so I've added some of that in and made estimates. We also might have to change his paycheck withholding to make sure they are pulling enough out for taxes too. For July we will have a better budget with retirement savings for both of us and better ear marks for savings.

$1424.00 paycheck one SCG

  • Giving $142.00
  • Mortgage (P&I, Property taxes, MIP): $802.98
  • Fast Offering: $10.00

  • Prescriptions & Doctors visits: $50.00
  • Date Night: $50.00
  • Birthday savings: $50.00
  • Discretionary/Clothes/Things: $50.00
  • Savings/Surplus: $22.90

  • Gasoline/Auto: $200.00

  • Roth IRA: $236.38
Estimate $160 paycheck one SCB (not a full week of work, training)

Estimate $320 paycheck four SCB  (another full week)

  • Church giving: $32.00

Remaining Financial Goals
