Emigrant Direct

So i opened the account... the two tiny balances i have to report are already in there...

but i can't access my account... i must have typed the password wrong and couldn't answer one security question ... my account is now locked and i have to call the number...

but i am impressed by the speed of the whole workings... Hopefully I'll get it all set up and move my "retirement" money there...

Eventually i think i may even move some of the tuition money.... but i think I'll experiment with it first (ING is really easy... not sure how easy Emigrant will be)...

So now i get to call that number...

  1. I have been using these three banks for quite a while now: ING, Emigrant and HSBC. There is no question that ING is the easiest to manage. It pays low interest but if you are not looking to transfer large amounts, it is a good option.

From the info on your main page, your tuition savings are about $2000. On that amount you are looking at $13 in additional interest in Emigrant. So you have to decide whether the additional savings are worth the compromise on ease of use.

  2. Ya, right now i'm pulling money and putting money into it, so for now, it will stay in ING. I figure i'll test drive with the "retirement" money first since i put money there every paycheck... this way i can get the feel for Emigrant.

    What is HSBC?

  3. HSBC = Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation. It's a bank of British origin and it's the third largest banking corporation in the world.

What's in it for us? It offers a 5.05% APY savings account (same as Emigrant) and very easy to use interface (not as easy as ING ..but better than Emigrant). I feel a bit safer with HSBC than Emigrant (there is no basis for this...just an instinct)
