He has a job!

He got a job...

He gets to work again...

and its full time....

No joke! I could dance all over the place.

The Details:
So South County Boy will start work officially on Tuesday for Goodwill! Well, technically through a temp agency that Goodwill hires from for the first 3 months... then after that I think they hire him directly if he pans out, but we aren't sure.

He won't be paid much, $9 an hour, but after a year and a half of unemployment, this is a gift. He will have to work weekends... but with him working 8-5 and getting paid weekly, what ever days he does get off in the middle of the week, i'll be home by 1:30 pm so we will still get to see one another... and have dinner together every night. Considering the types of jobs he could apply for at this point with his education, this really is a gift because most jobs would have required nights and that would have meant us working completely opposite schedules.

So what is he going to be doing?

He'll be running one of the donation drop off trucks somewhere from San Clemente to Santa Anna, but they told him probably orange county because that's the greatest need at this point. We have a few close by and were hoping he might get the one that's litteraly walking distance from our home... but that won't happen.

What is pretty cool, is he is allowed to do whatever when no one needs to drop off items... Like homework, reading, etc... and there's this program offered through BYU Idaho (through our church) where you can work on completing a BA, an Associates Degree, or even a certificate program.... and you can do the whole thing online and in local group meetings... and AT MOST a Bachelor's Degree cost $8k...

South County Boy isn't sure if college is for him, but i'm hoping he might consider working on his AA or a certificate program... and if he decided this works for him, he could work on it while working which would be nice for him.

So here's to a better 2013!

  1. Congrats. This should help your budget and retirement savings immensely! Tell him to bring a book because there are bound to be lulls between drop offs.

    1. He loves audio books and reads a ton on his phone... so we decided we won't drop our smart phones in July now that he has a job and it will be a big source of his entertainment...

and he has a million books at the house he's never read so I think he'll be able to read some of them now... and I might possibly get to get rid of some too!

    1. That's what i'm saying, especially for something 8-5 that works with our schedules and we thought he would only land something part time.

  4. That's awesome! If he isn't crazy about going to college, how about him doing an apprenticeship or attending a tech school for a trade? My husband is a plumber and while its not his dream job, he does make a good living.

    1. I keep tossing the idea around, but what i've learned from my husband is baby steps are best. so well let him get used to the job and then i'll toss the idea out again about getting his AA... I don't see him geting a BA, but with an AA in this job market its almost like the same thing without wasting all the money.

  5. He'll love it. There is an elderly man who works the one by my house-he spends the entire day listening to the radio and working on crossword puzzles.

    1. We literally have one walking distance from our home and I know its a lot to ask for, but we hope he gets that one and can walk to work for a little exercise and so if he needed anything I could come by and say hi.

  6. Congrats to you both! I'm sure it will be nice to have more breathing room in your budget, for Mountain Dew perhaps. LOL! :)

    1. Awe, mnt dew....

I still remember the picture of him hugging that cart... but the man gave it up and hasn't touched it since. He now just drinks some root beer and orange soda occasionally-- so i'm pleased with that because its not the battery acid Dew he was drinking before hand.

  7. Congratulations!!! I'd say $9/hr is really good considering he gets some down time to read and stuff. Great for your family!

    1. Ya, we are going to try and not "expand" our living so we can store up some savings and do some of the things we have had on the back burner for a while.

    1. ****Dances*****

It truly was needed. He was getting depressed filling out applications and not hearing back for jobs he had done in the past.

He's still going to be applying for other places because he doesn't want to work on Sundays so he can come to church with me (talk about a turn around there), but for now, this is an answer to some prayer.

  9. Oh, yay! I have been saying a prayer for you guys! I just love reading your blog - it is my favorite PF blog by far because it is personal and a day to day reflection of a real budget (like my own life).

I think this will be a good job for him and will be good to have on his resume while he searches for a bigger job. And down time won't hurt. I personally would have a hard time going from a low key not working lifestyle straight into a crazy crazy job.

    Keep us updated!
