Monday Link Love 6/6/09

Carnivals:

Now for a little Monday Link Love:

  • The Thousandaire brought up an interesting debate about how far some people would go to get college cheaper... They even have site to help you?!?!?!!?!?And this is just a fantastic video from Kevin. It's on his website as well, but I linked his You Tube page so you don't have to search for it.
  • One of my new favorite blogs, Afford Anything had 2 awesome posts that I discovered this week Investing in a home (man I wish I had her hubbys mad assessment skills!!!) and A Tree fell on our house last night....
  • Bank of America got foreclosed upon... This is just fantastic justice for anyone who is having to deal with them. I'm hoping that once my fiance has a stable job we will be able to pay down our mortgage to refi somewhere else because I dislike BOFA and I hate paying them my interest each month.
  • I just have to give props to this post from Retire By 40 . They are taking the time to "test run" early retirement for 3 months by attempting to live on one income with a newborn baby. I love how they are using this time to test run... Just awesome
  • and finally, Prairie Ecothrifter gave us a post about being slow and steady so you don't set yourself up for failure.

Monday Link Love 5/23

This weeks Edition of the Totally Money Blog Carnival was hosted over at Outlaw Finance and included my Post on Labor Ready and the Job Hunt. As always we are thrilled to be included in this weeks edition of the Carnival. Head on over there and check out the other great posts!!

And now, for a little Monday Link Love, my 5 favorite posts of the week:

  • JMoney from Budgets are Sexy, posted about how they were able to finally refinance their mortgage. I'm really thrilled for them because they had one of those interest only mortgages.
  • Master the Art of Saving, posted about her stash of Pirate's Gold... Which is just really plain awesome because I used to save golden dollars because it was better than a jar of pennies (making it easier to spend when I needed to) but prettier to look at and easier to count!
  • Yes I am Cheap, posted about a successful "Pay what you want Panera Bread" which I find just cool. I love when places like this are successful... and that all the profits go to charity.
  • Afford Anything, posted on how we should all Reject the everyone had debt mentality. Sure most of society is charge happy, but we don't have to be and it was a nice reminder that there is another way to live, a way my fiance and I are are working towards!
  • Punch Debt in the Face, posted about living with his parents... Knowing i'll never move back in with my parents, I feel a little bit for the guy and I'm glad its only temporary when he gets to finally stay with his wife again.
Happy Reading. If you link any posts from South County Girl, please let me know so I can included them in the Monday Link Love.

Blog Carnivals:

My Favorite Posts I discovered this week:
  • My $1 tax Refund Over at Donna Freedman's blog... A look at how valuable a buck really is.
  • Our Town Hall was built debt free Over at Spilling Buckets... a nice reminder of a simpler time when local governments actually looked at the people's best interests at heart.
  • Excuses aren’t valid anymore Over at Bean Town Happy Homeowner... How a simple phrase can really dictate and change your priorities.
  • The Costs Associated with Sharing a Car with Your Spouse Over at Super Frugalette... This post hit home because my fiance and I have talked about becoming a one car family if his dies or if it won't pass SMOG next year... Its good to be reminded of the possible inconveniences.

Wedding Location Update:

This post has been included in this weeks edition of The Totally Money Blog Carnival hosted by Retire by 40!  Go over and check out the great articles. As always, we are thrilled to be included!

If you haven't been following our journey, my fiance and I need to find a new wedding and reception site (See this post for why). Our main concern at this point is our budget since we originally planned on a park type wedding and reception.

So we drove down to Laguna Beach and met the wedding planner at the reception location she was talking about..Once we started talking numbers and comparing our old package to what we needed, we decided to make a huge decision...

If we got married in the park, we'd have to pay $250.00 for the 2 hour permit for just the ceremony... and then pay for the reception location as well. We asked about doing the reception in the park and paying for an additional permit, but we aren't allowed to--- ceremony only. Considering we only have our photographer for 2 hours, this would mean getting photos of just our wedding with no reception highlights.

So, instead of getting married at the park, we decided to have our ceremony on the front patio of the club house so we would only have one location fee. We still can get married outside (which was our priority) and the patio can hold all of our guests (70 people invited), seated as planned. Added bonus, no one's heels will sink in the grass. I can also get ready in the sitting room and remain hidden from my hubby to be's view until i walk down the isle. Since the ceremony was included in our original package, this won't cost us any more money since we'd need to book the facility for the reception anyway. Here's what our ceremony includes: Cost: $2,275.00
  • Decorated Arch with silk and fresh flowers
  • 70 white wood padded chairs, chair covers, and sashes
  • Gerber daisy's tied to chairs near the isle
  • Fresh rose petals to work as isle runner
  • Sand Ceremony tables, and colored sands (we bring the personalized jar)
  • Wedding coordination and reception
  • Delivery, Set up, and Tear down.
Here's what our original package included for the reception: $3,200 includes:
  • Our 3 tired cake decorated with Gerber daisies
  • Photographer for 2 hours plus his res photos on CD: ($450.00)
  • Plates for cake and 2 servers on site to help cut and serve cake, and pour drinks, refill containers, etc
  • Apple Cider toast for all guests
  • Ice tea & lemonade for beverages, including cups, ice, ext.
  • All the linens we need for all of our tables, INCLUDING additional tables not supplied at the location.
  • Decorations and fresh flower arrangements for the reception (including Gerber daisy center pieces)
  • Easel for photo signing (were having people sign a matted frame instead of a guestbook we will never look at)
  • set up, tear down
  • my bridal bouquet, 4 bridesmaid bouquets, 2 mom corsages, 1 corsage for my sister, & Father, Groom and 4 groomsmen's boutonnieres.
  • Wedding reception outline/timeline
  • taxes, delivery fees & gratuity
Our old package also included a decorated tent for the food and a decorated EZ up to cover and shade the "bride and groom table"... The wedding planner wasn't originally charging us for the tents in our first package, just the decorations since she owns the EZ ups and the Gazebo type tent. So, to make things more comparable she is going to upgrade our floral center pieces (they were originally very simple with just 3 Gerber daisy's in a glass vase) and add more floral decorations around the room and venue instead. We will be paying an additional $108.75 for centerpieces mirrors, candles, tea lites, cylinder glass vases, & bathroom toiletry's for the ladies room.

We will also need to cover the stage area with a little bit of draping so our photos won't be ugly (this will serve as the back drop for our couples table). We talked her into doing a smaller design that was simpler for $100 including the pipe draping.

Thankfully this venue also includes tables and chairs so we won't need to rent those (Phew!). The chairs aren't that pretty though... and since we have to pay for the chairs for the wedding ceremony, we are going to move them inside once the ceremony is over so we can use the pretty wood padded chairs with covers and sashes as the reception chairs (this will also free up the patio if people want to spend time outside). Win Win.  (There will also be staff from the wedding planners company to move them so guests won't be hauling their own chairs either.) The linens, centerpieces, and the rest of the decorations are included in our original package and can be modified to our new venue so we are good there...

We were able to discontinue the DJ we had originally booked at no fee to us. While we would like to have the DJ, the added location costs just aren't worth it, and the wedding planner voluntarily suggested we cut the DJ and go the Ipod route like we originally planned in the park before she got us a deal on the DJ. Now our music will cost us nothing, and saves us $200 that we already committed to spending.

Normally, the building requires a dance floor be rented, but the building owner told us that since we were using an ipod and having a DRY wedding (my family drinks too much and SCB's family doesn't drink at all), so the building owner was okay waving the required dance floor fee since we wouldn't be getting crazy with everything. $250.00 saved!

The location Fee is an additional  $1,100.00 and we'd have a cleaning fee of $150.00 and insurance comes to $120.00. The wedding planner's company is going to paying for the deposit on the building ($500)

So, our added package costs are: $1,578.75 (not considering the $200 we saved canceling the DJ). For needed a new location with less than 2 months till "I Do," I think we did an awesome job!

We are hiring a taco cart for $425 for our food (my sister had him at her engagement party and he's awesome) and having chips and salsa out too since our wedding starts at 1:30 and will be finished by 5:30 ish.

Car Insurance Changes Again, Part 2

This post was included in this weeks edition of the Totally Money Blog Carnival, hosted at Prairie EcoThrifter! Thanks for including us!

So a week or so ago I opened my car insurance bill and was delighted to see that my "fees" seemed to have gone down for my insurance premium. We think its because i'll be turning 25 in a few days and that is considered a milestone in the land of car insurance. So we joyfully recalculated our budget and were delighted to see that the monthly amount we needed to save was a bit lower...

So imagine my surprise when South County Boy went to the mail and we found HIS car insurance bill there too... and his premium has gone down as well! Maybe there is something to celebrate after you turn 21?

So my car insurance is now $363.75 every 6 months (about $60.63 a month) and South County Boys insurance is now $199.53 every 6 months (about $33.26 a month).

Just last month my mom got hit by a hit and run and lost her front bumper and had some other damage done to her car. She was okay physically (naturally shaken up) but one call to AAA and her car was in the shop, she was driving her free rental, and she was only out her $250.00 deductible. In California, having good insurance is essential... No one even pulled over to help her despite multiple witnesses.

We have our insurance through State Farm. We keep our deductible a bit higher on my car ($500.00) which makes our monthly payments more affordable. Insurance is for emergencies... not to limit your costs completely... and since we don't get in an accident every month, or year for that matter, we would rather have a lower monthly payment and a higher deductible since it should save us money in the long run.

We also don't have a free rental car on our policy like my mom has. We figure since we are a 2 car family, my fiancĂ© could always drive and drop me off at work in his car and I could take the bus home if need be. Yes, its a bit of a hassle to wait for the bus and take it home, but knowing all of our transportation options saves us from renting a car...especially since a monthly bus pass is cheaper than a one day rental car. We keep road side assistance on my fiancĂ©s car because its more likely to break and its only $3.00... but I have AAA for mine so we don't include roadside assistance on my car insurance.

To continue my mom's story, because her vehicle is older, 1996, and in their minds isn't worth the $3,500 to have it repaired because she has over 100,000 miles on it... they are "totalling" her car... How does this relate to us? well, my fiance's car is a clunker. Its a 1991 and isn't pretty by any means... but it runs... and in the event of any accident, his car would be "totaled" on first glance let alone inspection, so we don't need to spend the money to fully insure his car. We keep him covered if he hits someone else, especially since I have a condo... and for medical in case he's hurt, etc... so this keeps his premium lower because we aren't paying for services we would get in the event of an accident... (it also helps that he doesn't have a point on his licence for that stupid stop sign that I didn't fully stop at...).      =/

So, monthly for both of our cars we need to stick about $94.00 into savings each month so we aren't hit with a nasty bill. Since we are also homeowners, we have a few more insurance bills that we need to pay... but those are bills we pay annually. Here's the break down:

  • Homeowners insurance is $322 every 12 months (about $26.84 a month)
  • Earthquake insurance (cause we live in CA and the big one is coming) is $261 every 12 months (about $21.75 a month)

So for those 2 annual insurance bills we need to save around $49.00 a month to again not be surprised by a nasty bill in November, right before the holidays. So we need to save $94.00 for the cars  and $49.00 for the house... which works out to $143 a month that we need to save up towards all our insurance bills! Right now our insurance "sub" savings account at ING DIRECT has $839.60 in it, before May's deposits are made.

We will take $563.28 out of the account to cover the 2 bills that are due now, and leave the $276.32 in the account to cover the Homeowners and the Earthquake. Since we are half way through our budget cycle, we also check on the account in the account to make sure we haven't had any math errors along the way. We should have $49 x 6 months saved in the account... so we are actually $17.68 short of what we should have in the account at this point ($49.00 x 6= 294 minus what we have, makes us short $17.68). So we will need to add that in this month to make us balanced out.

But now we only need to pay $143 a month! Woot Woot!
