We didn't make it through our no spend month. We still added to our savings which was good, and I think it helped us start to get back on point a bit more, but we didn't make it, and there's no way to sugar coat that.
You see the flu hit SCB towards the end of the month... and a few days before that he forgot to take his antidepressants so we had a bit of a melt down week... and i called it off for his sanity.
But we have officially decided to just live off my income and try and save his.
For October, our budget will be a little all over the place because SCB will be changing health insurance plans. He's now eligible for his work benefits and the plan they offer is much better than his independent plan with Kaiser, but we will have to pay 2 premiums this month because his new insurance requires him to pay a month in advance of coverage.
But our emergency fund is growing and we finally have the sticker we need to register our car in California, so hopefully we can do that next week.

No Spend Update

Last Friday SCB went golfing for the first time ever with his work. They took all their clients out for a day of golfing (best ball) so SCB borrowed some clubs from a co-workers husband and had a great time.
The next day SCB and I went and volunteered in LA at the Child Share annual Gala (The organization I do the LA Marathon for each year)....
and we're exhausted. It was a really full weekend for us and were only now starting to get back into the swing of things.

Since we had to dress up and socialize, we used some of our "fun money" for the month to pay for some fast food for hubs... but we did spend $50 on the silent auction item we won at the Gala... but it was for a good cause so, ya... it happened.
SCB got paid on Thursday and after tithing, retirement, our allotted pocket money, and the $50 for the auction, we dropped another $375.35 to the Emergency Fund.
It's now at $10,613.25... so only $1,614.69 to go!
We also found out that SCB will be able to participate in his company 401k... and they do a 3% match if you put in 6% so we are going to set that up this week so we don't leave free money on the table.
Here's to hoping this week calms down!

Payday and No Spent Month Update
I got paid on Friday, which means our Emergency Fund got its first payment in operation no Spend Month/Save the Emergency Fund.
$269.36 was sent to savings.
This was comprised of the normal $100 we put aside each month for vacation and travel, our normal $100 which we use for eating out and discretionary spending, and $69.36... which was money that we didn't actually spend when we went out to Utah on gas. (With all the pending amounts from the various gas stations we stopped at, I rounded up at the end of my last post-- Real damage was only $172.06 in gas and tolls, etc--)
Which brings our EF to $10,237.90 / 12,227.94, leaving us only $1,990.04 away from getting it back up to 6 months of expenses.
SCB and I have been really good so far with spending too.
I had to take a few clothing items back to the store and exchange them for better sizes, so besides the $12.69 difference in price, we have only bought food, gas, and have paid our bills as they come in... and that's with attending a baby shower and a baptism this week too.
We adjusted our grocery spending to accommodate the items we were asked to bring with us for both occasions. For the baby shower we picked up spinach and artichoke dip and pita chips from Costco (leftovers we rolled over to the baptism since it was the next morning) and I added a fruit and a veggie tray...
I also made the following items for the shower with some yarn I already had in the house.

Both items were well received :) Its been 102 degrees for the entire week and we have been really good about not running our AC and using fans and cool water for both us and Roxy. We have been taking her out when it gets cooler in the evenings and I have been enjoying my evening cold water bath before going to bed and sleeping with an ice pack.
Next Friday SCB will get his first 80 hour a week paycheck. After 10% goes to Tithing, 15% to Retirement and we take out $20 each for spending money for the next 2 weeks, then rest will be diverted to our emergency fund and we should hopefully see a good jump in progress.

September No Spend Month Budget
It's been awhile since SCB and I have decided to do a No Spend Month... But with our emergency fund in a sad state after Sally's purchase, and with the unknown costs to register her legally in California, we are instituting a "No Spend" Month.
Since we don't know what a real 40 hour per week paycheck looks like for SCB yet, we are just leaving that line blank and will transfer whatever the amount is down to our savings.
Were keeping our pocket money, but that's it. I think this will be a good exercise for us to help rein in the crazy spending that's been going on.
Wish us luck as we just pay bill and buy just groceries and gas this month!

No Spend month.... Del Taco... and Socks
Well Last night I almost broke down and spent money i didn't really have to spend. I started volunteering at the tutoring center last night again... which meant I got up at 4am... was at work by 5:15 am, got off at 2:15pm... and was at the tutoring center by 3:30pm.
I was able to go home real fast, change, and make a snack before heading to the tutoring center, but by the time I left to head home it was 6pm and the thought of cooking dinner was not preferable.
Not to mention my dinner disaster the night before. (I was sauteeing some zuchini, yellow squash and eggplant... and it was starting to brown and smell amazing... until stupid me put in a bit more olive oil and covered it with a lid and it turned into complete and utter mush.) So i was really tempted by Del Taco because its by my house and a bean and cheese burrito and fries just sounded so good to me...
But I didn't... some how I just went home instead and popped a quiche into the microwave and ate that... but man was i tempted...
and now I need new running socks because the distances are starting to dislike my feet in my cotton used to be comfortable socks... So... I decided to get creative. I redeemed 3,900 points on MyPoints for a Target giftcard. My training friend was able to get some running socks there that were inexpensive (not $10 a pair from the running store.) so I'm going to take the target giftcard and use them to get a couple of pairs of socks.... So I won't be "spending" any more money.
I'll pocket the rest of the giftcard and I vow to only go into Target to get Socks and Shampoo (i'm almost out and I buy their generic brand). Thanks My Points!

January "No Spend Month Update"
So it's been 12 full days of January... and the only thing I've spent money on is groceries, gasoline, the original car costs for my maint, and my utilities.
I haven't bought anything non-essential so far.
I thought I was going to pay for one meal out (My best friends mom had a blood clot in her leg and I couldn't say no to my friend--- she needed to hang out and since she lives far away, I met her up by her work so staying in wouldn't have worked... So we met at a Denny's by her work.)
When It came time to check out and pay, she wouldn't let me. Adamantly refused.... but that's her for you.
I"m almost 1/2 way there.

The January No Spend Month
Besides my January Vegetarian experiment (which i'm hoping will lower my grocery costs), I'm also doing a no spend month. Christmas with the fiance in town did a number on my budget... and with wedding costs everywhere and my car needing its regularly scheduled check up... its time for a budget diet.
The Dress:
I got a line of credit from David's Bridal to pay for the dress. It's zero percent for 6 months, so I'll be making this my priority because I don't want to raid my EF for any wedding expenses (minus the deposit).
I put $607.92 on the card the first time I bought what I thought would be my wedding dress. Then all the exchanges went into place with my new dress (I put the alterations on my Cash Back CC so I had to also pay those in Dec) With the check I wrote in December heading to them, I have $300.00 left to pay off on the David's Bridal Card. Instead of adding to my EF (since I reached my goal last year a bit early) I took the extra money I had at the end of the month and filtered it to the dress.
Once that's paid off, I'm closing the account. I'm also going to be closing all of my other accounts that I don't use anymore. I know it will dent my credit score, but I have cards around my house that I never activated when they sent me the renewals.... and since I'll be changing my name later this year so it makes since to close my accounts as soon as possible to eliminate the paper trail and to make life a bit easier on me in the future.

CVS- I ran out of make up remover and I needed to print some pictures for boyfriends care package... and for my walls since the pictures in the frames needed replacing and it was cheaper to print out more because I had a $4 of $20 coupon and the prints were cheaper if you printed more... and they had a buy one get one free sale on 5x7!
=) My frames are happy now

There was some huge family drama that day and i needed to hang out with Amy, but she was already out at the bar so i swung by and hung out for a few hours, (only ordered one happy hour drink cause it is a "no spend month" and my grocery budget allowed for some wiggle room since i was so good this month)-- and Boscows was better then a gallon of ice cream all by myself throwing a pitty party in my living room.
I have to print out a few pictures and mail a package this month and I have $26.68 left in my grocery budget, but I should have enough food to get through the month so i'll be using that to print a few pictures and mail my boyfriend his care package with all kind of cute letters and things i've made him. (cause we are cute like that!)

No Spend Month Progress
I can't believe it, but I think i'll be able to add $600 to my emergency fund from my no spend month!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had the $54.94 left over from Vegas...
Then there was the $190 from taking the unbudgetted money, fun money, and piano money
I puppy sat (minus my kohls experience) $131.76
I have $28.62 left over after paying all my utility bills
I have $66.68 left over in my gasoline stash due to using my mom's truck, the rental, ect.
and then there's the regular $128.13 that i plop in my EF every month!
Bam! $600.13 all in the month of AUGUST!!!! I can't wait till Friday when i get paid, and can officially drop the money into my emergency fund.

had to toss another food item that went bad... One small zucchini started getting limpy on me...
the oatmeal has been weighing on me with the warmer weather... so this week I used up most of the eggs i bought and hard boiled them and eithe put them in my salads I made for BOTH potlucks I went to... or i've been slicing them up and eating them on toasted wheat bread since that's the only way I can eat eggs at work (if they are hard boiled at home and then taken to work)

Groceries- I bought some dinner things to suppliment the few things i'd been using up in my pantry. I was also incharge of "family dinner" on Monday (4 ppl) so we BBQ'd some chicken breasts from the freezer and I made a HUGE salad to go with it. I also have to bring a salad to a potluck at church on Thursday... So I decided to keep things simple (and not to waste food) I'd do salad's this week for lunches too. (and get all salad out and move forward next week with a different veggie option.)
Subway- I got caught starving durring band practice cause I worked that morning, ran to the puppy sit gig to check on em, and then hit practice and by 4 i was all grumpy and irritable so i choose a veggie footlong at subway with a bag of chips (saved half the sandwitch for the next day since I was stull puppy sitting and I really hate cooking there.)

Groceries- I bought some dinner things to suppliment the few things i'd been using up in my pantry. I was also incharge of "family dinner" on Monday (4 ppl) so we BBQ'd some chicken breasts from the freezer and I made a HUGE salad to go with it. I also have to bring a salad to a potluck at church on Thursday... So I decided to keep things simple (and not to waste food) I'd do salad's this week for lunches too. (and get all salad out and move forward next week with a different veggie option.)

I sent an extra $25.96 to my house payment because I had a little over an hour of overtime from a meeting, and if it lands in the first check, its just easier to tack it on to the mortgage to balance my accounts.

Kohl's got the better of me...
So Sunday rolls around... the last day of the HUGE sale at Kohl's )no sales TAX, and an extra 15% off everything... plus sale prices) that i'm avoiding because its a no spend month... and I'm doing laundry... and one of my bras got completely ruined cause it accidentally got put in the dryer (it was hiding in one of my bath towels)...
So I decided to make an exception and go to kohl's...but before you chastise me, I told myself I wouldn't buy anything until I went through the massive closet... So i spent some time finishing all my laundry and making a list of things that needed replacing due to wear and tear... and tossed out a few things I no longer wear, and put a bag of clothes that didn't fit in another closet for donating later (if i don't drop 5lbs and love the stuff again).
I figured I might as well buy the few things I need this month when they are on sale, then wait and pay wayyy more money next month just to prove a point (and i didn't blow all kinds of cash in Vegas last month which paid for the traffic ticket, AND my car won't be costing me money after all AND I'm puppy sitting this month too so the emergency fund will still grow AND rules were meant to be broken ) =D
So what did I get and how much did I spend?:
2 bras
One top to match a skirt I already owned (and had nothing that would match it)
Gym Top for the LA Marathon (I begin training next month and last years will not cut it again)
New Shorts (for Marathon Training)
Gym Capri's (for work)
When I got to the register I opened a Kohl's charge card to get an additional $20% off on top of my coupons... I saved $112.24 and spent $43.24 with Tax and everything.
Then I turned around and wrote a check to pay the credit card bill 2 seconds later =D
