So my account is up in May and since i won't be living in my apartment for much after that.... and I won't have a new address... I've been talking to my mom about letting me go on her auto insurance account like I used to, and just paying the pro rated difference until the end of the year.
This will ultimately save me a few bucks here and there because its a house, not an apartment, and there are discounts for multiple plans.... The only down side is that i'd have to drop my renters insurance... But next year i'd go ahead and get my own account again... most likely...
You could always get renter's insurance from another provider. In my area, it's about $100/year.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever gotten insurance quotes from other companies? AAA is one of the more expensive ones.
ReplyDeleteWhen you get your own policy again you might want to try Progressive, Esurance and AIS. Also, since you don't own a home yet you might be over-insured. I saw an insurance calculator on someones website, I think it was Suze Orman.
Are you sure that you want to get moms involved in your life this way again? Just renew your insurance with your current address and deal with the change when you move.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what It is... but AAA is actually the cheapest for me...
ReplyDeletefor renters insurance and car insurance i'm only paying $120 a month now...
on my mom's account it drops to below $100!!! (i'm gonna get the quote in a few days)
Is your mom on your title with you? Otherwise I'd stick to your own insurance. If something like an accident were to happen to the car, the check would be made out to her (since she's the policyholder), not you. Just my two cents worth from working in insurance.
ReplyDeleteI'm the only owner and the only name on the title for the car, but wouldn't my name be on the policy???
ReplyDeletehmmm... an interesting thought, but I'm still going to go for it because the savings in significant enough and i'm definently in the save mode!
If it's your mom's insurance policy, than no, your wouldn't be the policyholder, she would. She's the "first named insured" so claim checks get made out to her. You'd just be thought of as a relative (household member) and vehicle operator. You could always talk to the agent about it, maybe your insurance company is more flexible.
ReplyDeleteAnother option might be to see if her insurance with write you an auto policy and give you the home/auto multi-policy discount that she's getting for being in the same household. My company does that, but we don't operate in CA.
I'm all about saving money too.
