Debt is still at 50% paid off... Hopefully when SCB goes to Labor Ready they will have some work for him because we need to replace some computer parts so this weeks earnings may have to go to fixing it instead of debt... ***cross your fingers for work!***

Cutting a Check to the wedding planners

So on Saturday I cut a check to the wedding planner for the remaining balance we owe her (over 6k) ... and I'm trying not to freak out about the few things that have unravled in the process.

  • The Taco Cart Guy forgot about holding our date and won't be able to do our wedding... so now we need to figure out food...
  • Only 40 people have RSVP'd for the wedding while 22 people are still up in the air... (which makes finding a new food option difficult)
  • My sister is trying to drag me into the middle of all the drama surrounding my batchelorette party... the details of which are supposed to be a surprise...
  • I still have a rehearsal to plan...
  • and our BEST MAN might not make it out to California after all...
Ya, my fiance's best friend has been in South Carolina for 2 weeks hanging with a buddy and apparently applying for a job at a prison center? His wife is still in Utah working, living with his family, and wondering when he's coming home. He's in a similar position as my fiance work wise (his partner in crime) so jobs have been difficult to come by... and since his wife isn't as outspoken as I, he hasn't been too motivated to find work.(They also have money issues, communication issues, and got married very young... I'll be posting more on their situation later.)

She has sworn that she's at least coming to the wedding, has taken the time off work and is still intended to be a bridesmaid and to support South County Boy and I... but she has no idea about her husband since he hasn't called her in a few days. I just don't know what to say about any of it... I want to comfort her but I can't since i'm not there to smack some sense into him... and it just complicates things for the wedding... and I feel soooooo guilty thinking about that. If he gets the job and decides to stay in SC and can't make it to California then all the program fans I've made are ALL wrong (and its money wasted down the drain).... Not to mention we'd need to find a new best man... and if that happens, one of his brother's will "stand in" as a groomsmen and my "brother" will not only Escort me down the isle... but he'd get promoted to Best Man too.

Things are starting to come unglued... and its crazy. We also have no idea why he even went to apply for the job since his wife has no desire to move to South Carolina AT ALL. He's staying with his buddy down there (who paid for the flight) so we are hoping he just wanted to get some fishing in, do the interview to appease his friend, and will be coming back to Utah very soon.

I feel like money is just slowly draining away on things that keep changing because people don't have their crap together... This is the problem that happens when you are the first person from your circle of friends to get hitched and everyone is in their early 20's...

Debt and Work Update

So my fiance was able to work 3 full days and one half day last week at Labor Ready!!! We always get excited for work and with this weeks earnings I get to adjust the progress side bar to show he has $750.00 saved up to give to his parents... We are half way there folks!!! Only $750 more to go and we start our marriage off DEBT FREE (sans the mortgage).

Sadly, though we aren't sure how much longer they are going to need a third person in the kitchen working. He's already been cut on Fridays unless theres an event or one of the other two guys needs to miss a day... and this week he got a half day in because they didn't need him all day.

But money is money, income is income, and its good for my fiance to be out of the house and coming home with a paycheck.

The only bad news is that since he didn't work on Friday, and since Monday is a holiday we have no idea if my fiance is "invited" back to work on Tuesday...

He tried to call in a few times yesterday but couldn't get a straight answer... we even tried piecing together a shredded time card to get the number for the company he's been working with.

So now he'll have to show up early on Tuesday just in case he needs and get in line for work again if he lost his gig...

Hopefully he'll be invited back to work... We can only cross our fingers at this point since we never know how long a job will last and we have been very fortunate so far.

I need balance...

We have to find some new way to create balance for the 43 days we have left before we get married... because I'm falling apart at the seems... I'm stressed out... and I want to cry.

Last week I had a completely different work schedule and it was amazing. I only had one 5am shift and I spent the rest of my week working an 8 to 5 schedule at City Hall. I could sleep in and still get up early by most people's standards, occasionally swinging by the condo to update the blog or start a load of laundry before heading out for the work day...  & I even had the energy to stay up later without almost passing out on the couch so we got more quality time together because I was coherent.

Even though I worked back to back shifts all weekend long teaching a lifeguard course, we got to spend so much more time together because, to help simplify things, I stayed a couple of nights at the condo (with south county boy on the couch of course)... and it was heaven... we got to see each other more... we bickered less... and it was just so nice to be home and not have to pack each night to leave...

The only problem now is that "little taste of heaven" has made this week very rough on me as I try and transition back to my 4:30 am alarm going off at a different home where I walk down the stairs in the dark so I don't wake the dog... and where goodbyes at the end of the night feel like the painful goodbyes we had when I left Utah and drove 3 states away.

It didn't help that I had a bad dream last night and woke to the sounds of a coyote KILLING a dog at 4am and all I could do was just sit in bed and listen to it whine and die horribly.

...

I'm finding that i'm just worn out from the constant house flopping and I just don't have the energy or the motivation to get things done. I'm trying to cook a nice dinner every night because its the only time we have together before I leave, but its just sapping my energy to have everything on the table at 6:15 when he gets home. Normally on the weekends we grill and make dinner together, but midweek it generally falls to me because I get off earlier and if we wait to start dinner until SCB gets home we won't eat till 7:30 at night and I have to leave at 8pm to head over to the home I've been staying at. It just doesn't work... mid week for us just stinks... especially since I don't have any days off this week to recover since I have to work the holiday weekend.

I have wedding things that I still need to order, projects to finish, phone calls to make to those who did not RSVP... and location change notices to either make and mail out... or call and notify over... I need to get focused...

My fiance also isn't at home eating leftovers anymore because he gets a free lunch at work everyday... which leaves the leftovers for my lunch. Now normally this isn't a issue, but lately i've been trying to cook foods my fiance will like for dinner... and those tend to be hearty comfort foods since he's been working on his feet all day... and those foods tend to be unhealthier than what I normally would take for myself for lunch (girly food). So instead of a really healthy breakfast and lunch, and a normal dinner... i've been eating more heavy foods as I try to noy waste the leftovers... We either need to reconfigure portions so we have less leftovers, or start adding new meals to the rotation because I can't do this to myself so close to our wedding.

Just to understand the chaos, here's just a glance at my last couple of days:
Get up at 4:30am... out the door by 5am... clocked into work by 5:15... short workout on my lunch break... home by 2:30pm... started a load of laundry... emptied the dishes from my lunch and the sink into the dishwasher... started dishwasher... wiped down the kitchen... changed into house clothes... made a snack... watered and took care of my plants... updated the blog... got to watch a TV show while I started prepping dinner... Served dinner at  6:15... cleaned up dinner while South County Boy showered... then showered myself... packed my overnight bag... tossed together a quick lunch... tried to sit with my fiance for a min or two before I left the condo at 8pm... (forgot my cell phone at home in the process)... Asleep by 9pm...

Alarm at 4:30am... few crunches and push ups... at work by 5:15am.... worked straight till 2:30pm because I have a conference... got home around 3... started a load of laundry (SCB put away the other load), emptied my lunch and the sink contents into the dishwaher... Ate food because I missed lunch... changed my clothes... watered the plants... updated the blog... and was too exhausted/not hungry to make dinner because of my late lunch...

Rinse and Repeat

Five for Friday Round 5

J Money over at Budgets are Sexy is hosting another round of Five for Friday- Random Money Questions... So without further ado, here we go:
  1. If I gave you $100 in cash, right now, what would you do with it?
  2. What if I then told you it was stolen?
  3. What happens if you go over budget? Do you cry?
  4. Why do we get so excited to talk about money?
  5. Tell me a joke :) If you don’t have one, tell me something awesome instead.

hmmm, lets see
  1. I'd put the money in my honeymoon jar so I could go para-sailing in Catalina.
  2. Seriously J Money??? U just ruined my honeymoon plans.... :(
  3. If I go over budget i'll take money from the next month to insure everything will go back to normal... but I don't cry over it because I keep 2k in my bank accounts as padding for little oopsies so it doesn't effect my Emergency Fund.
  4. Because having it and having a plan for it sets us free... we don't have to worry as much as others, we have less stress, and it allows for us to take chances and enjoy the world around us because we don't have to worry about if we have enough to get us through the month.
  5. A guy walked into a bar with his giraffe. He ordered a drink, and the giraffelay down beside him. The bartender barked angrily, "Excuse me, but you can'tleave that lying there!""Err," the man said, "It's not a lion. It's a giraffe."

A letter from our HOA

Back in March we got a notice from our Home Owners Association about the building we live in. Apparently we have had too many problems in the past few months with the boiler that controls the water for our building (and 4 others). In an effort to help prevent future issues that cost the HOA a great deal of money (and every owner by default), the board has voted to be proactive about the situation and require that owners in our building make their home available for a plumbing inspection.
Essentially they fear that OWNERS aren't addressing issues that they are responsible for because RENTERS aren't reporting issues to their owners... or people don't mind leaky faucets because water is included in the HOA bill....
They gave us two days to choose from to have an inspection, a Saturday and a Sunday. As an added convenience, the HOA also worked out a deal with one of the plumbing companies to offer a 10% discount on any mandatory repairs that they find. The inspection itself is free
I'm actually all for this because for the past few months not a week has gone by where i've gone to get the mail and NOT seen a water shut off notice affecting my building... and when you do laundry on a Monday because its your day off and the water is scheduled to be off... it's such a pain!
So, I tried to call up the HOA and make my appointment like a good owner... but unfortunately no one in the office was there so I left a message with the answering machine company and waited... and waited... But no one returned my call. I called back again, talked to the answering machine company for a second time and left a message.... and still no one called me back.
The first date of the inspection passed so I continued to call for the second inspection and got the same song and dance. After that inspection date came and left, I called again to complain about how I tried to be in compliance with the letter... and still no one returned my call.
I'd actually forgot all about it in its entirety until I got another notice the week saying that they would be having the plumbers come out AGAIN because I failed to set up an appointment.
(the nerve...)
Just FYI, the association is in GREAT financial standing because the board members are awesome... we just can't afford a pricey property management company and we are stuck with this lady until we can get enough money together for a better company. If I personally have a problem, I'll attend a meeting to ensure my issue is handled.
So I called the HOA again around 10pm and this time I got the person in charge... (the key to getting a hold of her is to apparently call after 10pm because she's more likely to pick up thinking its an emergency). When I told her I was calling to schedule my appointment for my unit inspection, she tried to tell me I had the date wrong even though I was reading from her letter... (I ultimately had to tell her to look at the letter and then a calendar)...
All in all, I was finally able to make my appointment. I wasn't worried about having an inspection because I had all my hoses and my shut off valves replaced when I remodeled my unit less than 2 years ago (and I got good ones).
Since I was at work for the inspection, my fiance handled everythingThe guy was a bit late (because the HOA told him the wrong time to show up), but once he started with the washing machine and saw the new valves the inspection went off without a hitch and didn't take very long at all (he was actually relieved to see how great our place was)... He told my fiance that the last unit he looked at had a kitchen sink leak that was going to cost 2k to fix...
Hopefully the other owners will call in and get their units inspected and fix the problems so my water stops getting turned off... But I doubt it. The lady from the HOA told me that only one other unit in my building had called in to make their appointment. It's times like this that i'm glad I have a second floor unit so I don't have to worry about getting flooded because other people didn't fix their plumbing issues.

Putting my money where my mouth is literally

As most of you know, when I was getting my invisiline done, I wasn't a happy camper AT ALL. When I first elected to get Invisline I was told it would take a year and a half at MAX to go through the process, that I was a candidate for the program despite the excessive state of my teeth's condition... and that the invisiline would give me the same results that typical braces would.

It was 4x the price of braces (because you had to pay upfront for all the aligner trays), but since I was in college and going to graduate soon I didn't want to go through having braces in my early job hunting days... especially since i'm 5'1 (and look young enough without them)... Plus I hated having braces as a child because they were so hard to clean. In the end I opted for the larger expense of invisiline because I could take them out to floss, for pictures, or for any interviews I went on. I paid for the invisiline on care credit (0% interest for 12 months) and paid off the balance within that allowed time frame.

Once I started my invisiline, the problems started as well. After I got my first "tray" and wore it for a month instead of the advertised 2 weeks, they put adhesive brackets on my teeth to help "hold the tray in place"... something they failed to mention to me when I signed up for them. The next month, yes month not 2 weeks, they introduced me to "IPR" where they jam a metal strip between your teeth and manually grind your teeth to create "room"... IF this would have been explained to me I would have opted for the braces since they move multiple teeth at the same time so you don't need to grind them.

And FYI, I'm not a stranger to pain or dentists. I had 4 teeth pulled when I was a kid for my first set of braces and I was awake when they removed all four of my wisdom teeth (and I didn't take the Vicodin they prescribed me because I didn't need it). So when I complain about someone doing spotty dental work, something is wrong.

Since I had to pay in full for the whole thing I was stuck with them unless I wanted to walk away from $4,500 and pay someone else another $1,600 for braces... so I tried to wait it out because that was more money then I wanted to spend to be able to bite into a burger and not have the lettuce come out between my teeth.

About 5 trays and 5 months in they started talking about bracketing my teeth... and I lost it. Essentially my teeth were not moving the way the trays were trying to force them to move. They admitted in not so many words that they should have just recommended me for braces...

So I went to bat. I got them to agree that if it came to the point where brackets were necessary that they would pay for them and I would be entitled to a partial refund of my invisiline costs since it was so much more than my original quote for braces. They agreed but they said I would need to exhaust all my "revisions" that were included in the price before they would attempt braces. So they re-molded my mouth and sent me off for my first revision to try again with the invisiline.

4 years later and three full revisions I had to get braces... My bottom teeth were straight, but my upper teeth were no longer responding to invisiline. When the time came to put them on, I had to fight for them to comp the braces again, and I could kiss goodbye the partial refund. The paper they put in my file was missing and after arguing for a half hour they agreed to comp my upper permanent retainer ($800) and agreed to give me my clear braces at no cost. Thank God i'm not afraid to stand up for myself anymore--- at least financially speaking. I also closed my care credit account to insure that I wasn't going to get billed there "accidentally."

When the braces came off, they tried to charge me for my upper retainer despite agreeing to comp it just a few months before... They brought over a woman and she started yelling at me telling me I was wrong... I stayed calm and told her to go talk to the doctor because she was in the room when (the woman who was yelling at me) agreed to comp it herself. The doctor who was working with another patient just told her to let me go and to not push the issue. I didn't end up having to pay for it... but the lady made me feel guilty... like I did something wrong and was trying to steal from them.

At that moment I decided I'd never step foot in there again... not even for my free whitening that I was entitled to. They even left bracket glue on my teeth from the braces because they couldn't remove it all and they almost ruined the enamel on one of my teeth trying to.

So that leads us up to this week....

The glue holding my lower retainer in place snapped off. I knew I was in a pickle because money has already been tight with the new wedding location costs... but I just couldn't go back to that evil ortho place again... even though it should have been free to have them repair it.

I decided i'd put my money where my mouth is, literally. I called my dentist that I LOVE and told her about my situation (she was well aware of my horror stories from when I came in for all my cleanings). She told me to come in on Monday and she would look at it for free to see if they might be able to fix it... and they would let me know how much it would cost before they did anything so I could get the work done that day, or come back at a later time if need be. They also told me they could refer me to a new orthodontist if i needed one and would rather go there instead.

When I arrived the staff couldn't have been more professional. I showed my dentist which teeth still had the glue on them from the brackets, and where the retainer had come loose. She asked the billing department to cut a deal for me and they agreed to do the work even though they aren't an ortho office. They re-bonded my retainer for $75 and charged me $110 to remove the glue remaining on my 3 upper teeth. I was in and out of the office in no time and it was PAINLESS. I wasn't crying in the chair swearing that they were yanking my teeth out... or almost choking on my saliva... (both of which happened while they tried to get my braces off at the ortho place). My dentist even kept checking in on me throughout her work to make sure I wasn't in any pain and that I was satisfied with everything.

I thanked them as I left for their wonderful work, put the $185 charge on my AMX (since they closed the billing cycle for this month already I can work the dentist costs into next months budget) and I left a happy customer.

I'm actually really happy I paid for the work to be done by someone else because the quality of the work was worth the $185 alone.

Monday Link Love 5/23

This weeks Edition of the Totally Money Blog Carnival was hosted over at Outlaw Finance and included my Post on Labor Ready and the Job Hunt. As always we are thrilled to be included in this weeks edition of the Carnival. Head on over there and check out the other great posts!!

And now, for a little Monday Link Love, my 5 favorite posts of the week:

  • JMoney from Budgets are Sexy, posted about how they were able to finally refinance their mortgage. I'm really thrilled for them because they had one of those interest only mortgages.
  • Master the Art of Saving, posted about her stash of Pirate's Gold... Which is just really plain awesome because I used to save golden dollars because it was better than a jar of pennies (making it easier to spend when I needed to) but prettier to look at and easier to count!
  • Yes I am Cheap, posted about a successful "Pay what you want Panera Bread" which I find just cool. I love when places like this are successful... and that all the profits go to charity.
  • Afford Anything, posted on how we should all Reject the everyone had debt mentality. Sure most of society is charge happy, but we don't have to be and it was a nice reminder that there is another way to live, a way my fiance and I are are working towards!
  • Punch Debt in the Face, posted about living with his parents... Knowing i'll never move back in with my parents, I feel a little bit for the guy and I'm glad its only temporary when he gets to finally stay with his wife again.
Happy Reading. If you link any posts from South County Girl, please let me know so I can included them in the Monday Link Love.

We used some "fun money" from South County Boy's checks for a couple of fast food runs for him this week because I was working some insane hours and either didn't have the energy to cook, or i'd already eaten before he got home so we just ran out and grabbed him something. This week we stuck a little convenience food into our grocery budget this week since i'm working 14 days straight so hopefully this will keep us out of del taco.

South County Boy also really needed a haircut since he didn't want to buzz his head like normal so he has hair for the wedding... so he popped out to super cuts to have them do what i'm not skilled at. I can work his buzzers, but I'm not savvy enough with scissors.

My fiance deposited a few more checks from 2 more days at Labor Ready and one night working with our contractor friend, bringing his debt savings account to $550.00!!!!! Only $950 to go!

Adding South County Boy to my Bank Account... UPDATE!!!

Mid week  I got a call from my fiance a little bit after 5:30pm. Traffic was lighter than normal and he thought we might be able to make a bank run. Not that type of bank run... our version just entails BOTH of us getting there before 6:00pm. (See: adding South County Boy to my bank Account)

Even though he still needed to drive down to Labor Ready and pick up his time card for the next day (and his daily paycheck), he felt optimistic since the idiots who normally drive "the 5" must have boycotted the freeway today. We decided to make our game plan. The closest Bank of America to Labor Ready is conveniently the one right by our condo.

At his words I grabbed my purse, quickly locked the door behind me, and flew to the Camry. It was cold... I was without my sweater... but I was determined  (lol) !

I drove the whole way there (like 2 miles if that...) and began to wait outside... 5:45pm... 5:50pm... 5:55pm... and BINGO! My finace comes jogging right past me and into the bank. I followed him in and tapped him on his shoulder to get his attention... (Well actually I pulled on his shirt because in reality I'm 5'1'' he's 6'5'' and tugging on his shirt is just easier).

There were a few people in line before us but half the battle was already won because we had actually made it there TOGETHER... before it closed! After maybe a min in line, the 6 people before us were cleared away and we approached the teller (I swear bank tellers are far more efficient in the last 15 mins of closing because they can smell the freedom from the end of the day). I told her that we needed to add my fiance onto my checking account so we could cash his paychecks.

When she told us that we would have to meet with a personal banker to do that...I started to panic for a second until I realized there was still one "personal banker" in the building helping an older lady. Phew, our efforts were not in vain after all!

The teller told us to take a seat in the corner and wait for him to finish up. So we did as we were told. At 6:00pm the bank doors were locked... and we were still inside.

Have you ever been in a bank or an establishment when the doors that say "These doors must remain unlocked during business hours" are in fact actually locked???  ... its a little weird and a bit eerie.

Since we were still inside-- feeling like we were breaking the law by merely being there--- my fiance and I decided to amuse ourselves by casing out the joint from where we were sitting. We counted all the security cameras, sensors, and other devices we could see from our chairs... By 6:15 I was starting to get impatient and antsy since we had run out of things to count and we were going to be late to our pot luck.

Naturally we decided to take this time to debate what we thought the building "used" to be before it was a bank...

My fiance was sure it was a Pizza Hut because no one would possibly use this floor plan for a bank originally... 2 sets of glass doors kitty cornered on opposite ends and sides of the building... no actual vault for valuables... and the sitting room was not near the front area at all, but way off to the side and completely non-user friendly.

Before I could start my own fantastical rant on how the place was probably a pets store, a woman came up to us who worked at the bank and told us she was sorry for the wait. Then she "eye balled" the checks in my fiance's hands, frowned, and told us someone would be right with us. As she walked away I followed her with my eyes to see her interact with another teller. He frowned slightly too... It was then that I put two and two together. He couldn't cash out his drawer yet since we would be making a deposit or cashing a check once we got my fiance added to the checking account.

At this point we began to feel bad for him, but at the same time it was pure luck that we were even able to make it to the bank before it closed... (and I had tried to come in earlier on another day to add my fiance on the account already)... Add in the fact that it wasn't our fault that the "personal banker" was still "assisting" the older woman still and all my guilt disappeared.

Finally at 6:25 the oldler woman left and the personal banker unlocked the front door for her... and then locked it again... (which again, makes the bank creepier considering the WANTED poster on the front glass from a recent robbery in the area.

My fiance and I sat down and begin getting him put on my checking account. We were glad I though to grab my fiance's social security card in my haste to leave the house because he needed 2 forms of ID and without it we would have only had 1!!!!!!!!!!

We signed some form, went to the teller, and cashed my fiance's checks... We joked with the teller about the horrible printing job Labor Ready did on 2 of my fiance's pay stub statements because they were low on ink, and about the tellers ID number--- I'ts totally 007 (As in James Bond Double 0h - 7--- which makes our casing the joint from earlier seem hilarious, especially with the WANTED sign outside on the door)

So James, err I mean the teller, seemed almost envious that my fiance gets a paycheck everyday after working instead of waiting two weeks for one... I decided not to mention the free lunch he also has been getting every day since he works in the cafeteria... nor to mention the occasional sugar cookies he gets to bring home when they toss out some of the food that doesn't sell... No need to ruin Mr. 007's day any further.

We then headed over to the glass doors to wait for the banker to let us outI remembered that they hadn't given my fiance a debit card... and I'm glad I remembered to ask!

The banker looked a little white in the face like he forgot to do something after I mentioned it to him... (but in hindsight that might have been because we were now chatting inside the bank with the door partially open... The door with the WANTED poster attached to it.)

He replied, "... Oh, well uh, we'd have to do some more paperwork for that.. when do you get paid next?"

My fiance replied, "tomorrow... i'm paid every day... (and seeing the look on the guys face, he added) but I probably won't come back till Saturday when i have a few more checks." Relief washed over his face and the banker told him they'd have a temporary card for him on Saturday when he came back.

So now my fiance can now go cash his checks on his own!

Five for Friday Round 4

J Money over at Budgets are Sexy is doing another round of 5 for Friday!
  1. How long have you been at your current job?
  2. Are you happy?
  3. What do you do there? (task-wise, or job title)
  4. How much do you get paid to do it? (feel free to be anonymous!)
  5. What’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened there?
  6. *Extra Credit: A magical genie grants you 1 wish to change jobs – you can choose anything in the world. What would it be? (money is good regardless)

  1. 9 years, various positions. My current position I've had for 5 years.
  2. 2. Most days... some are just long and hard and i'm not motivated... but lately I've really been enjoying me job.
  3. I'm a "jack of all trades" gal and I work in the RCS department. I manage the desk and office work, design flyers, design website content, teach safety classes, lifeguard, work on special events and projects, process AP and AR, input gym memberships, etc.
  4. It's under $20 an hour plus benefits and my pension
  5. Someone broke their arm in an elliptical... we've had people take to many meds and spend to much time in the jacuzzi and had to call 911 when they no longer became responsive... we've had homeless people try and move in... (i could go on forever).
EXTRA CREDIT:  I'd work for Child share and find kids good loving homes in a safe environment.

We got our marriage certificate!

One of the regular employees at my fiance’s part time gig (through Labor Ready) pulled him aside on Thursday to talk about hours and scheduling. My fiancé was a little worried because this hadn't happened before... and earlier that day he had actually forgotten his time card at home and Labor Ready had to fax another one over to their office so he could still work (his time cards now live in the car so he can’t forget them at home).
So it’s safe to say he was a little bit nervous that the guy was talking to him about hours and scheduling, especially since he thought he had lost the gig when he came without his time card..
Apparently Fridays are their slowest day and they don’t need 3 workers from Labor Ready to come in and work in the kitchen because less people are in the building. My Fiance only worked last Friday because their regular second guy couldn't show up so his position went up for grabs and he was able to take it because he was first in line at Labor Ready (See Labor Ready and the Job Hunt).
So, since my fiancé was the newest guy there and therefore had less seniority, he told him that he was going to have to take Friday off since the other two guys with more seniority choose to work.
BUT Before he could freak out about losing the position, the guy told him that he would mark on his time card for them to have him come back out on Monday so he wasn't losing the gig altogether.
Phew….
So, we decided to take this opportunity as a blessing in disguise and seize the opportunity to get our marriage license.
On Thursday night we filled out an online application for a marriage certificate for the local county office. We couldn't book an appointment for the next day because it was already booked up… but the site said that appointments weren't necessary so we decided to wing it and take a chance.
My fiancé came by my work during my lunch hour and we took the freeway and drove over to the County Office (which is conveniently in the area and took us less than 10 mins to get there!!!). While we briefly stood in line we got to see a happy bride walk out of the office after having her civil ceremony. While the county office is really pretty, I’m glad we get to have a ceremony and reception at our new location so our friends and family would get to be there--- that would be the one thing i'd miss the most if all the plans fell through and we needed to get married at the court house.
Anyway, the lady was able to pull up our online application from the night before. While she was printing us off a copy to verify, we simply made small talk. My fiancé asked me if I wanted to grab a bite if we had time before going back to the office (and continuing my shift from 8am to 9pm… yup a 12 hour day today because today is the start of the new lifeguard course at work --happy overtime!) but we wouldn't have the time despite our luck with the short lines and my lunch was at the office hanging out in the fridge. We instead decided that we'd grab a soda together from the vending machine back at my work and spend a few mins together if we had any time left.
The woman at the counter asked us to raise our right hand and swear to the best of our abilities that all the information we gave was truthful... after parting with $61.50, my fiancé and I had our marriage license… and he didn’t have to lose his job for us to get it!
(Previously we believed that my fiancé would have to elect to miss a day at work for us to get our license... and therefore forfeit his temp job through Labor Ready.)  The county office is only open M-F and those are the days he works and at Labor Ready, you only have a job if you can show up every day. The first day you can’t make it they give it to someone else and  you have to get back in line the next day and wait for a new job to open up that fits your skill set... that's how he got the job in the first place... someone else failed to show up.
But there's something even awesomer still (yes, I know it’s not a word but I’m determined to use it anyway cause this tidbit is just great)...  My contractor friend called my fiancé up on Thursday night and asked him if he would help him out on Friday with installing more mirrors at that hotel up in L.A. since the next shipment came in for a different floor!!! So, my fiancé was still able to get some work in for today (earned $50) and we got our certificate. It seems like luck is on our side!
